Some times the budget just doesn’t stretch far enough. It reaches to the weekly food bills, groans to accommodate insurance, gas, and whimpers to spit out enough for an occasional dinner out or haircut.
But I have discovered that one way God provides in leaner times is by allowing material things to last.
Take our car.
My jaw dropped when my husband drove home a brilliant blue F.J. Cruiser, ten years ago. It seemed way too extravagant a purchase. What was he thinking?
Fast forward a decade.
We are still cruising along in our Cruiser. It has faithfully taken us through freezing Illinois winters and steamy North Carolina summers. It sports the best blue paint job ever sprayed on a vehicle. People often ask if it’s new. (Well they did until I recently scraped the bumper on a brick garage corner).
Little do they know… that baby has 250,000 miles on it. Living proof God stretches shoe leather.

We fixed up a room that needed help. We wanted to hang a lamp that would do it justice, but that wasn’t in the budget. A lovely hanging lamp from my wife’s grandmother was boxed up in the garage. Lo and behold when we tested the wires, it worked. It needed some metal polish and scrubbing, but now it is continuing its decades of illumination.
